Ask the experts: what flowers to choose for someone who isn’t well?

We asked Sharon Peddie of Blanc Florist what sort of flowers should we choose to cheer up a person who isn’t feeling well.

The first question is: where is the recipient recuperating? At home or in hospital? If in hospital, make sure they’re not in ICU, where flowers aren’t allowed. In the general wards, table space is limited so a cheerful and colourful compact arrangement, like our box posy, works really well at brightening up the patient and the ward.

Remember that patients don’t have access to vases so ensure the arrangement you send comes with its own container. Also, be careful to choose flowers that aren’t too aromatic or contain pollen. Chrysanthemums, gladioli, hydrangeas, sunflowers, peonies, tulips, sweetpeas and zinnia are all good options.

For patients at home, a bright house plant can lift their spirits and, symbolically, green represents health and wellbeing.

We personally deliver arrangements to a patient’s bedside. Free of charge!
