Hubbie and I were definitely in need of a new mattress – ours had become lumpy and saggy in all the wrong places – so when the opportunity to collaborate with Emma® Sleep came up, we were ecstatic.
Emma Sleep was founded in Frankfurt, Germany in 2015 and now enjoys international success selling its mattresses and sleep accessories in over 30 countries and across 5 continents. And now, Emma mattresses are available in New Zealand.
A few years ago when we moved into our apartment, two very strong lads had to haul our king-size mattress up three flights of stairs, manoeuvre it around corners before eventually settling it onto the base in our bedroom. They were exhausted at the end of it all! Imagine my surprise when a wee lass delivered our new mattress to our door… in a box… on a trolley!
A mattress in a box!
We easily pulled the mattress out of the box and lay this thinnish, vacuum-packed item on the base. This is when the magic happened! Once you start slicing open the protective plastic, the mattress begins to expand until you have a fully functioning 30cm mattress ready and waiting for bed linen. It’s as simple as that!
The company does recommend airing it for a few hours before making the bed but this gave us a chance to read up and explore all the features.
The Emma Mattress aims to support ideal spinal alignment using patented technology and materials. The mattress is enclosed in a removable, and washable, cover which, in my opinion, is a great bonus. A week into our journey I decided to see how easy it is to get the cover on and off and find out whether or not it is easy to wash. With two people, it is fairly simple to do and, thankfully, there is no shrinkage so it wasn’t like trying to stuff something into Spanx!
Foam mattresses sometimes tend to trap heat, but the Emma has been engineered to allow air movement which makes it a cooler option and is great for hot sleepers like myself.
The cover lets air circulate into the mattress which helps regulate its temperature and the first layer – about 4cm of Airgocell polyfoam – has been designed as an open-cell, breathable structure so that air can permeate and dissipate away from the sleep surface.
The first layer also adapts to the shape of the sleeper’s body to relieve pressure points.
Next, a 5cm layer of memory foam contours more deeply to further reduce pressure build-up. The final layer is 20cm of supportive polyfoam and reinforces the surface of the mattress and limits sinkage. Overall, the design redistributes the sleeper’s weight to take pressure off areas like the shoulders and hips which means you don’t wake up feeling stiff and creaky!
So, how was our first night?
Mattresses are tested and given a rating out of 10 for firmness – the Emma mattress rates a 6, which is a medium firm feel. I would put the firmness at around 7-8. Our old mattress had a softer topping so initially, the Emma felt quite hard for us. However, we are starting to get used to it and have been enjoying really good, deep sleep. A fabulous part of the design is that there is ZERO mattress disruption so you don’t get disturbed when your sleeping partner is restless or gets up in the middle of the night!
Other great benefits:
The Emma Mattress comes with an extremely generous 100-night risk-free trial which means if you’re not happy with the mattress during that time period, you can return it. I mean, how many other mattress companies give you 100 nights to evaluate them and then give you a full refund if you’re not happy? All you have to do is contact customer support to arrange a pick-up date and you’ll be issued a full refund on the purchase price.
And what happens to the mattresses that are returned, I hear you ask?
The wonderful thing is that all returned mattresses find a good home with one of Emma’s charity partners, such as The Salvation Army.
Another great benefit is that you don’t need to flip the mattress every few months although the company does recommend turning it every so often.
Is there a Warranty?
Yes! The Emma Mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, which protects against defects in materials and workmanship, including issues with the cover, cracks, dents, and other damage to the foam.
Awards?
It’s always reassuring to know that a product has won awards – that gives your decision more certainty and security. You’ll be pleased to know that the Emma Original mattress has been awarded CHOICE Recommended status in Australia for two years running – 2020 and 2021. It’s also won a raft of awards in European countries and the brand is amongst the most sold mattresses in the UK.
Final thoughts
The Emma Mattress is a great choice for those looking to replace their mattress and, with their Easter sale on now, it is great value for a product that is sure to meet most people’s requirements. Over the past two weeks, we are now used to the firmness. We did change our pillows and that gave us the perfect alignment and support and gives us a really good night’s sleep.
I am a hot sleeper and definitely feel that I don’t overheat on this mattress.
Overall, I’m very pleased we ditched the old mattress and took the plunge with an Emma mattress-in-a-box. And, if we move again, the movers will be delighted that they don’t have to haul a massive mattress to our new home.
