In focus: ‘Earth at Night in Color’ and other things we loved

Every two weeks we share all the stuff we’ve recently enjoyed – from the latest TV shows to must-try foods, gorgeous makeup products and the most exciting spots to visit in New Zealand.

Earth at Night in Color (Apple TV+)

Forget the crappy photo-negative shots of night cameras you’ve seen in nature documentaries before! For the first time in history, these Apple TV+ series follow animals at night IN FULL COLOUR! You basically see the night life as clear as day! Using special low-light cameras that are a thousand times more sensitive than the human eye, the show’s cameramen followed animals across six continents to learn more about their life in the darkness. Apparently, most animals on the planet are either nocturnal or are more active at night and, prior to this, we had no proper access to study their night life. Narrated by Tom Hiddleston, the episodes of this show are stunningly beautiful, informative and pretty much as packed with action as those other movies we all love Tom Hiddleston for 🙂

Plant-based chick’n, Tofurky

It’s amazing how big and diverse vegan shelves at the supermarkets have become! Recently discovered at Pak ‘n Save is this gem for lazy cooks – lightly seasoned vegan chick’n from Tofurky. What’s so special about the little fella? It’s ready-to-eat! So, if you’re not in the mood for a long cooking session today, just add a couple of chunks straight from the refrigerator to a salad bowl for your daily dose of healthy protein. Chick’n also works well cooked in a curry sauce, though we recommend adding it last minute as it disintegrates into small pieces quickly.

Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food, from Sustainable to Suicidal, Mark Bittman

No matter the era or destination, there is something that unites people all over the world and throughout the history – food. We all eat and that’s something we’ve always been doing.

In this book, best-selling author Mark Bittman explores the industrialisation of food in the past century, how it has affected both climate change and the health of people and the possible solutions to save ourselves and our planet.

There are so many theories and research on this topic but one thing goes without saying – something on Earth has gone horribly wrong and things need to change. So, the more information you have, the more weighted and helpful decisions you can make.

Unlike many books on sustainability and food production, this one reads more like a history book rather than a health book and thus offers a different perspective on familiar questions.
