Is it really all in the mind?
Never underestimate the power of your brain. It’s powerful enough to fuel the functioning of your entire body. When you have a healthy and sound mind, you can go beyond your limitations and achieve more than you could ever imagine.
That said, when you participate in activities that lead to the detriment of your mental wellness, it negatively affects your psychological, emotional, and physiological well-being. It is for this reason that you must invest your energy in biohacking wellness or engaging in daily habits that promote improved mental health.
5 Daily Habits for Building a Healthy Mindset
You don’t need to purchase expensive medicine or master a type of secret art to achieve a healthier and more content mindset. You can start small, by tweaking certain activities in your routine. Sometimes, all you need is a little effort to build it up into a lifelong practise that helps elevate your quality of life.
There are five daily habits that you can use as your starting point to enrich your mindset
- Take as much rest as you need
Listen to your body. If you are sleep-deprived, recharge your mind and body and hit the sack. Don’t force your brain or your body to work when it’s tired. Overworking beyond the point of exhaustion is one of the biggest injustices you could ever do to yourself. Eliminate the mindset that you have to keep hustling to be successful or to prove yourself.
Poor sleep affects your cognitive development. You may have accomplished a lot, but you will notice that you feel more exhausted, drained, and burned out than ever which, of course, is not a good sign. It means that you have been ignoring your body’s desperate cry for decent rest.
Healthy minds don’t come from hustling day in and day out. Rather, it comes from consistent nurturing and knowing when to pause and unwind.
2. Follow a routine
If you are someone who is used to rushing in the morning or is habitually late, perhaps you should also pay attention to how it is affecting your concentration. At first glance, a routine might make you want to roll your eyes for the sheer dullness that it implies. What you might not realise is that routines give you more control over the circumstances that surround you. You can manage your time better and measure how much effort and energy you put into certain tasks. Routines are also effective at reducing possible errors since you can also add a plan B, C, D, or even more letters to your daily cycle.
Say, you are preparing for a long trip. Sticking to a cycle where your body is conditioned to wake up early trains your mind to be alert whenever you need it to. At the same time, you are less likely to forget any important items in your luggage since you have enough time to list and backtrack all of your essentials.
3. Hydrate and Fuel Your Body with Vitamins and Minerals
Drinking up to 8-10 glasses of water replenishes your mind. It helps get rid of toxins that may be detrimental to your brain’s normal functioning. Also, when you take part in strenuous activities, you are using up energy that your brain also needs to ensure that all your other organs are working properly. When you are dehydrated, you’ll find it difficult to focus and process new information.
For women, physical activity during their period requires twice the amount of recharging to help get them back on their feet. Hydrating yourself periodically throughout the day reduces cramps, and backaches and keeps your energy levels in check.
Both men and women should also drink water to flush out bacteria in their kidneys and liver, regulate their body function, and boost their pain tolerance and immunity.
Eating a proper diet should go hand in hand with your daily dose of water. Steer clear of junk food, sweets, and fast food. Replace these with vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, protein, and whole grains.
4. Feed your brain with new information
Whenever you feel stumped, unmotivated, or lacking the same enthusiasm you have with your hobbies, consider that your brain might be stuck and in dire need of stimulation with new facts or data.
Learning something new every day, whether that’s a small fact or detailed information, is beneficial to your brain. It’s like a form of exercise or workout for your mind and, as the new information has to assimilate with the old knowledge, it’s a form of upgrading your brain.
Developing new skills hones your self-esteem and allows your brain to restructure previously-stored information into a brand new perspective. This is also the reason why reading is a must-have habit for people of all ages. You can pick up a newspaper, a fictional book, a self-help guide, or even open a PDF version of a successful individual’s autobiography. Better yet, why not sign up for webinars and courses about subjects and fields that you are interested in.
5. Spend time with nature
Nature has its way of calming the nerves and easing your worries. It helps you breathe in positive energy and breathe out the negative. More importantly, the environment reminds you of how coexisting with other living beings on the planet is also a part of humanity’s responsibility.
You begin to ponder on sustainability practises along with how you are contributing to preserving the earth. How does this help you maintain a healthy mindset, you ask? By caring for the environment, you help reduce pollution that could be detrimental to your health. You aid in preserving natural resources that are necessary for your survival. More importantly, it makes you ponder on whether you are exerting the same amount of effort on yourself.
Don’t deprive your mind of much-needed TLC. Remember, you are not a robot! A happy and healthy mind will help you go beyond your capabilities and reach new milestones in life.
