Kids at Ōtūmoetai Playcentre have been gripping paintbrushes and getting hands-on with colour as local artist Millie Pidwell inspired them by demonstrating the creation of a new mural. The workshop provided children with the opportunity to work on their own visual masterpieces alongside the artist.
During the design process, Millie collaborated with Playcentre families to incorporate their design ideas, as well as the takitimu kowhaiwhai patterns of Ngāi Tamarawaho iwi. The project was made possible with the support from a grant from Tauranga City Council Creative Communities Scheme.
Inviting questions about the creative process, playcentre participant Sonny Macartney (4) said, “Woah! How is she painting a tuatara?” and “How does she paint so big?”
The resulting mural is a unique piece tied to the local community in which it is displayed and proved popular with both parents and children. When asked about the design, Emmie Ball (3) said “I love it!”
According to Playcentre parent, Jodie Moore, the depiction of the legend of Taurikura is the perfect backdrop to the centre. “Not only does it reflect our belonging to the local area, the story itself is about guardianship of the land and about kindness to those in need – qualities we want to instil in our little ones,” explained Jodie.
Once the piece had been completed, local iwi representative Kaumātua Des Tata of Ngāi Tamarawaho attended the unveiling ceremony alongside centre families and life members, to bless the new mural. Sheldon Macartney, Ōtūmoetai Playcentre Co-President said, “It was a really special day. We were delighted to be able to gather as a centre and take part in the blessing, made all the more memorable by the presence of Kaumātua Des”.
The artist, Millie Pidwell from Murals by Millie said “I loved working with the families and local iwi on the Playcentre mural. Together, we created a very vibrant piece of art that celebrates the land, its stories – and will be enjoyed for many years to come!”
Ōtūmoetai Playcentre is a parent-run early learning centre nestled in the heart of Bellevue and is open each weekday from 9am to 12pm.
The centre offers child-led play for children aged 0-6 years, free adult education for parents and the opportunity to become part of the Ōtūmoetai Playcentre village.
