You know that feeling. The headache that creeps in during the afternoon, the slightly fuzzy head, the sudden realisation that you’ve barely had anything to drink all day. And if it’s been hot, you’ve been exercising or you’re simply someone who tends to sweat a lot, dehydration can catch up with you surprisingly quickly.
My husband is a classic example. He’s prone to getting dehydrated and then developing a headache, and his usual solution has been to grab one of those ready-made hydration drinks from the supermarket. It works, but I’ve never been particularly keen on the idea of buying and drinking them regularly when there are simpler options you can keep in the cupboard.
So when we were given the chance to try Good Health’s new RE:HYDRATE, it seemed like a pretty good opportunity to put it to the test.
Rather than being a bottle of pre-mixed drink, RE:HYDRATE comes as individual sachets of powder. You simply tip one into water, give it a mix and you’re done. It contains three key electrolytes – sodium, potassium and chloride – which are among the minerals we lose through sweat. It also contains B3, B5, B6 and B12 to support normal energy production, along with vitamin C to support normal immune function.
There’s also glucose in the formula, which helps the body absorb water and electrolytes. In other words, it’s designed to do a little more than simply make your water taste interesting.
And then there are the flavours.
My husband immediately gravitated towards the Pine Lime, which he says is his favourite. I’m more partial to the Berry and Watermelon flavours, particularly when they’re mixed with ice cold water and you want something genuinely refreshing. There’s also Mango – tropical and tasty.
I also like the fact that the sachets are easy to throw into a handbag, gym bag or suitcase. They take up virtually no room, so you can have one with you rather than remembering you need hydration only after the headache has arrived.
Of course, none of this means we should stop drinking good old-fashioned water. For everyday hydration, it’s still the obvious choice. But there are times when we need a little extra help – after exercise, on a hot day, when travelling or whenever we’ve lost more fluids than usual.
For me, it’s a little something to keep in the cupboard – and in my bag – to help keep me hydrated through deadlines, desk days, busy afternoons and everything in between. And if my husband can swap his supermarket drinks for a couple of sachets tucked away at home, I’m calling that a win too.
