6 Signs You are a Chronic Procrastinator

Procrastinating can be bad for your mental and physical health and it can make you feel miserable because there is a ton of stress that comes with it along the way. But the first step to handling the problem is looking for some of the signs that you are a chronic procrastinator. From there, you can take the necessary steps to help solve the problem.

Some of the big signs that you are a chronic procrastinator and need to handle the problem include:

You Avoid Unpleasant Tasks

All of us will encounter some tasks that we don’t want to get done. But often it’s best to just jump in and get to work on it, rather than waiting until the last minute. If you find that you put off all unpleasant tasks until the last minute, then this is a big sign that you are a chronic procrastinator and you need to get this problem under control as soon as possible.

You Make a Lot of Excuses

When you don’t want to get a task done, it’s easy to make a lot of excuses about the work at hand and how you want to accomplish it. You may run to the bathroom, check another email, make yourself another cup of tea, say that you don’t have the right skills to accomplish the work, or claim that you are waiting for someone else to show up and do their part. There are always a lot of excuses in life, especially when you’re procrastinating and don’t want to get the work done at all. Rather than making excuses, it’s better to kick the excuses to the curb and focus on getting work done.

You Look for Distractions

Distractions are all around us and it doesn’t take too long to find them. When you don’t want to do a task, then you can find a million ways to eat up your time and not get the work done. Or, you may allow distractions to take up your valuable time, making it hard to get any type of work done at all.

Rather than letting distractions have this kind of control, you need to learn how to limit them until your important work is done. This means turn off the phone, ignore the emails, and avoid social media. These may seem like fun things to do, but before long, you’ve wasted loads of time doing them and you still have a big pile of work to get done.

You Struggle with Time Management

Time management is critical if you would like to get all of your tasks done. But not having good time management skills can mean that you will procrastinate and leave your work to the last minute. Many times, when we are bad at time management, we may feel like we are constantly busy and never able to get things done on time. We may not pay attention to which tasks are most critical and need to be done first, leaving the big, important items until the last minute. This can lead to procrastination, which is never a good thing.

You Lack Confidence in the Task

In some situations, you may avoid a task because you don’t feel confident that you will be able to do a good job. You may feel like you aren’t qualified or that you don’t have the right knowledge and skills to even get started. This will result in you taking your time to do the task because you just don’t feel capable. Jump in and take action. Ask someone if you need help. Everyone becomes better at things the more they do them.

You Never Seem to Have Time to Get Tasks Done

Whether you have a lot of tasks on your list to do or you have just a few tasks to follow up with, you find that it feels impossible to keep up with it all. You work late, you come in early, and you spend hours at your desk without getting paid more. You see others rushing through all of their work and getting it done on time, but you just haven’t mastered that art form yet. This could be a sign that you are falling prey to some of the distractions in your life and not focusing on getting tasks done the way that you should.

Once you start noticing these common signs of a chronic procrastinator, it’s time to make some changes. Procrastination doesn’t help anyone, least of all you! Recognising the signs and then taking care of them will be the best way to get your life back on track.
