Let’s talk about your muse. A creative muse is any source of inspiration you rely on to enrich your life and provide you with creative ideas for your next project that wants to be birthed into being. The word muse comes from the Greek ‘mousai’, and refers to the goddesses of creativity and the arts.
Today, a muse can be anything from a daily routine for your creative work to a song that inspires your own creativity. Sources of inspiration are inspiring people, music, poetry, art, dance, a place somewhere in nature, or a city, reading… the list is endless.
What is YOUR muse?
Your mind is a powerful thing, from creative pursuits to mindfulness and meditation. Finding a muse sparks your imagination, and this imagination is the beginning of creation. Lean in to your creativity, your inspiration, your muses and your imagination, and you will live a fullfilled and meaningful life.
How can you find your muse?
► Connect with people
► Socialise with people to get new ideas and perspectives
► Seek out other creative people who share your passion
► Listen to podcasts or interviews of people that inspire and motivate you
► Sign up for a workshop or course that sparks up your creativity
You can also locate your muse through creative pursuits. Here are some ideas on how to do it:
✨ Listening to music and/or dancing
✨ Creative writing, where you write whatever comes to mind to get your creativity flowing
✨ Reading different stories to find creative inspiration
✨ Doodling, painting, or drawing to relax and stimulate your creativity
Any kind of environment can be either inspiring or depleting. There are many ways on how to find inspiration in your environment:
✨ Explore the world around you to find new ideas. Pay closer attention to common places in your life, such as home, work, the grocery store, or a local park. Spend more time thinking about and watching your local environment in order to find something that inspires you. Try out these fun ways to make your daily routine more engaging and inspiring.
✨ Change your creative environment. You may find inspiration from the scenery, scents, and sounds that surround you in an unfamiliar space.
✨ Engage with nature to get inspired and spark your imagination. It is easy to find inspiration in the natural beauty of the world. You can also try travelling to different parts of the world to experience unique landscapes.
Mother Nature is a great, infinite source of inspiration for me. Going into nature relaxes your body, nervous system, and mind, and it nurtures your heart and soul. The kinds of muses you might find in nature are:
✨ The slow, gentle waves of the sea
✨ The reflection of the sunshine on water
✨ The greenery that reaches and grows
✨ The chirp of birds as they go about their day
✨ The endless power of the largest trees
Like with everything, we need to find the BALANCE between external inspiration and internal integration. Otherwise we end up feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. And our MUSE turns into a nightmare.
Take some time and ask yourself:
What inspires ME to let ideas flow?
What sparks up MY desire to create?
And where is MY balance between external focus and internal reflection and integration?
It feels so empowering and energising to explore the sources of YOUR muse. And it feels even more empowering to know YOUR limits and boundaries: when it is time to be still, to rest, and to let the external inspiration marinate until it is ready to be birthed into BEING.
Remember that one of the key ways to spark a new muse is to find this inspiration in other people. Whether it’s an expert in your field or a near and dear loved one, everyone has something to teach us. Anyone can inspire us. We just need to be mindful and listen.
