In focus is a fortnightly, online update on things that the focus team has loved. New places we have discovered, food we’ve enjoyed and events that have made us happy – here’s a glimpse into our lives from the past two weeks.
‘Chernobyl’ miniseries
“You are dealing with something that has never happened on this planet before!” These words are spoken by the scientist Valery Legasov, one of the main characters of HBO’s probably most brutal and gut-wrenching shows ever. If that doesn’t send a chill down your spine wait until you realise that he’s actually talking about a non-fictional catastrophe that took place in Ukraine in 1986. The one, where one of the world’s worst nuclear power plant accidents could’ve wiped out the entire population of Russia, Europe and Scandinavia for centuries.
‘Chernobyl’ runs over five episodes (the last one is yet to come) and follows the events in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus from the first few seconds after the catastrophe, when hundreds of people were fighting to save the planet – in spite of knowing they would eventually die in horrible pain in 5, 10, 30 days or 2 years time. The mini-series transfers you back in time to that period where arrogant bureaucrats and the stream of terrible events are so frightening that it destroys the very fabric of your being while you watch it. Every tiny Soviet architecture detail, outfits and social relationships are reproduced so authentically that it feels as though you are there.
Time to Glow Up collection, Wet n Wild
On 24th May the latest addition to the Wet n Wild extensive makeup collection appeared in Farmers stores around New Zealand. They’ve added a few new shades to the Mega Glo Highlighting and MegaGlo Loose Highlighting Powders range. These ultra-pearly and easy-to-blend formulas look radiant on top of cheekbones, around the eyes, décolletage, or anywhere else you choose.
The Highlighting Powder’s creamy formula is infused with nylon for a silky-smooth application and seamless blending. We love using it for a gorgeous glow on our cheeks and on the bridge and tip of the nose for a bit of a slimming effect.
Hunt & Gather Bee Co. honey
This small family business from Raglan produces a really delicious artisan forest honey. The range consists of five different flavours – from Kiwi classics such as Manuka to the more intriguing Kamahi or Rewarewa. We personally prefer their Bush blends that contain either nectar from the native trees on the Coromandel Ranges or from the hills surrounding Raglan. After all who doesn’t like a good gourmet journey?
