In focus is a fortnightly online update on things that the focus team has loved. New places we have discovered, food we’ve enjoyed and events that have made us happy – here’s a glimpse into our lives from the past two weeks.
PUMP collection, Wet n Wild
Many women want to remain glamorous whilst working out but can sometimes end up looking a hot mess post-workout. Wet n Wild has come up with the perfect solution and, working with YouTube Pilates superstar, Cassey Ho (Blogilates) has just brought out the PUMP line. The ATH-beauty – short for athleisure beauty – collection was designed to be waterproof and can be used both in and out the gym.
The entire collection can easily fit into your gym bag and consists of over 30 products, including a 3-in-1 BB Cream, highlighter and corrector, as well as eyeshadows, lip colours, exfoliating balls and blotting papers to wipe away all shine, oil and dirt.
We particularly love the Full Circuit palette with its three powerfully pigmented eyeshadows, two long-lasting lip colours, a lightweight blush, bronzer, highlighter and two colour correctors. And we can’t go past the exfoliating cleansing balls that lather up beautifully and remove all traces of makeup – ideal if you want a quick cleanse after a workout.
There’s no doubt that the PUMP collection will be seen in many gym bags in the not-too-distant future.
The Source Bulk Foods at Bayfair
Who doesn’t love a company that has saved 300,00kgs of packaging and 50,000,000kgs of plastic bags from ending up in landfill? AND has, so far, donated AU$50,000 to Sea Shepherd! We’re talking about The Source Bulk Foods which opened a franchise at Tauranga’s Bayfair Shopping Centre just under a year ago.
This organic health food store has an impressive range of bulk wholefoods, healthy snacks and goodies as well as personal and household products. Customers are encouraged to bring their own refillable bags and bottles and embrace the mindset of zero waste. The truth is, you would be surprised how much packaging you can save from landfill and how much you can reduce your carbon footprint with a few simple changes to your shopping routine.
Try the delicious dark chocolate covered Turkish Delight, almond butter protein balls, hazelnut and fig granola or the very moreish date and coconut squares.
Carnival Row
When it takes someone 10 years to develop a script, you know this thing is definitely going to be worth your time! Add Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne playing lead roles – and you get an unquestionable masterpiece.
Carnival Row is set in the gritty, fantastical Victorian-era city of Burgue populated by humans and oppressed mythical creatures, like fairies and fawns, who have had to leave their war-torn homeland and gather in a city where they are not welcome. Referred to as ‘the 7th century’, this world is, in fact, a mesmerising mixture of XIX century social patterns, technologies and outfits with the racist prejudices we, unfortunately, witness even today.
The series follows the relationships between two soulmates – a fairy, Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevigne) and half-blood detective, Rycroft Philostrat (Orlando Bloom) – who met at war, lost each other and reunited again in Burgue several years later.
Carnival Row was originally meant to be a film but Travis Beacham created such a unique, fantasy-heavy, dark world, it became simply impossible to fit it into a movie. But there is definitely a movie legacy in the way the plot evolves. Unlike many TV shows that follow a classical movie scheme of dividing the plot into three parts – which results in a few episodes in the middle of the season being a bit slower and less captivating than the prologue and final – Carnival Row episodes each have three parts, so every single one is stuffed with events and unexpected twists like a Thanksgiving turkey.
