FOMO and ‘hustle culture’ is a true problem of today’s employees and self-employed professionals. We fear that by giving ourselves an opportunity to rest or have some time for ourselves, we’ll be missing out on business opportunities and seen as lazy and not ambitious enough.

Entrepreneur and TikToker Marisa Jo Mayes is convinced this approach to work should stop as it leads to nothing but burn out and a lack of satisfaction from what you do.

Since she started sharing her Bare Minimum Mondays videos on the popular social media platform, people all over the world are realising how important it is to prioritise your own health and happiness that in return leads to better productivity and more efficient workflow.

And Marisa achieves her work-life balance through Bare Minimum Mondays. She swears this approach changed her life and helped her find that balance between herself as a person and herself as an employee.

So, what exactly are those?

In Marisa’s own words, it’s a way to ‘ease’ into your work week and avoid ‘Sunday scares’ (when you spend your day off dreading tomorrow).

On Mondays, Marisa usually starts working a little later. She spends mornings doing things for herself, things that bring her joy, things that help her wake up and feel energised. It can be work-related too but it will most likely be some journaling, reading or learning something new.

At around 10am, she’ll move on to some of her more creative and exciting tasks – shooting content for social media, creating promo graphics for her business, etc. She’s working on her startup but she’s doing work she truly enjoys which makes her look forward to the entire week ahead!

Finally, after lunch she’ll tick two to three important but more daunting tasks off her to-do list. She no longer tries to do as much as possible on Monday – there will be time for that later in the week!

One more rule? No meetings on Monday! This is the time to focus on things you can achieve yourself.

For those willing to give Bare Minimum Mondays a go, Marisa suggests ‘paying attention to where you’re putting unnecessary pressure on yourself or setting unrealistic expectations. If you know you won’t have time for something, don’t put it on your list’.
