Ok, first of all – how did you come up with the idea of Balloon Party Box?
Lots of my friends were complaining that every time they organised a party, they had to go to Tauriko, Bethlehem, Papamoa, etc., to get everything. There was no place to buy all the decorations you need in one place! So, I came up with the DIY PACKAGE – all shapes and size of balloons and accessories in one box. That’s why we’re called Balloon Party Box.
Is it possible for someone to assemble these on their own? Do you include instructions?
Creating your own design for the first time is a lot of fun! And it’s easy to put everything together and experiment with different garland shapes. They can use their imagination to create any design! We send videos on DIYing balloon garlands to our customers as they are the best tool to learn and understand! The only thing to remember is that it might take longer when you’re doing it for the first time, so if you don’t have time for that, you can always use our services for a full set up and pack down.
How difficult is it to learn to create designs like that professionally?
I started by just watching videos online, and then practising myself. It took lots of practise! Then, I switched to online courses and more professional courses and lessons from world professional balloon artists.
What designs are the most complicated?
Outdoor set ups are always more challenging and take much more time, especially because they’re so weather-dependant! I remember setting up at Memorial park on a rainy, windy day… Imagine using hand pumps on a day like that! Balloons were literally everywhere. But the result was worth it! The customer was very happy.
How flexible are you with the designs – do you have certain installations for people to choose from or can your clients choose colours/sizes and tell you what they would like you to create?
Some customers choose designs they’ve seen on our Instagram page and ask us to re-create them. Others want to change the colours or show us a picture they’ve found online, and sometimes they just leave the design entirely to us – we’re always happy to accommodate!
There is no such thing as a bad-looking design, when it comes to balloon garlands! Everyone likes different styles and colours. But sometimes, I do have to give professional suggestions – for example, to use lighter colours for outdoors, to use taller but narrower arches for small spaces, etc. It’s only a matter of our experience, not our tastes!
These designs are so gorgeous! Can people keep them after the event? How long will they last?
Yes, after the event, customers keep the balloons. Balloon garlands last up to 4 weeks, or even longer.
What’s been the most surprising choice from customers since launching Balloon Party Box?
How popular are the shades of blue! That is one of our most popular colours and there is one specific design we have that our customers absolutely adore – we’ve re-created it more than 30 times already! Exactly the same design. We still make it slightly different each time, though to ensure it’s unique for our customer.
You use latex balloons. What are the environmental benefits of using these over other balloons?
Latex balloons are biodegradable, so there is no harm to the environment and they only create a very small amount of waste. The balloons we use in our installations are made of natural rubber latex that is collected and worked with using environmentally-friendly techniques.
So, how should one go about booking an installation for their event?
The good news is that there is no need to book in advance – we are very flexible and quick. Most of the time, people book early – up to one year in advance or even more. Of course, the earlier the better, so that we can get everything prepared. But we also do take last minute customers! You love supporting local creators and entrepreneurs. Who are your partners and collaborators here?
We always support small local businesses and love collaborating with them at events. Our flowers are made by a local florist, our acrylic plinth, board etc., are made by Papamoa locals. The signs all come from a local store in Papamoa. We have collaborated with many local events, such as She Is Unleashed, Bubbas and Bubbles, Hospice, local Farmers Market, etc.
Who is Jolly outside of Balloon Party Box?
Jolly – just like my name, I am a very happy person with positive vibes, a very funny girl. I love travelling. I used to work for Singapore Airlines as cabin crew for 4 years and I have visited many countries and cities. Travelling is my most favourite thing to do in my free time!
