The Perfect Winter Pairing: Norsewear and Sawmill Brew Up Something Special

There’s something undeniably satisfying about pulling on a pair of warm wool socks after a long winter’s day and settling in with a cold craft beer. Now, two proudly New Zealand brands have brought those simple pleasures together in an unexpected collaboration.

Norsewear, the iconic Kiwi company that has been making quality merino socks, beanies and gloves since 1963, has teamed up with Sawmill Brewery to create a limited-edition cold-fermented IPA that celebrates local craftsmanship from start to finish.

The beer is crisp, refreshing and easy-drinking, brewed exclusively with New Zealand ingredients. It also becomes number 73 in Sawmill’s Aotearoa Series – the country’s only beer series made entirely from locally sourced ingredients, including New Zealand-grown malted barley, oats, hops and yeast.

While socks and beer may seem an unlikely pairing, the collaboration makes perfect sense for two businesses that share a passion for quality, authenticity and backing local.

The idea had been quietly brewing for several months before finally making it into a can. Norsewear Managing Director Tim Deane and Sawmill co-founder Kirsty McKay settled on an IPA – a style that’s approachable, widely loved and perfect for enjoying after a day spent outdoors or hard at work.

“When we spoke with the brewers about what was coming up in their innovation pipeline, we landed on the IPA because it had the broadest appeal,” says Tim. “Personally, I’m a Pilsner drinker first and an IPA second, but I had complete confidence in the team to create something people would really enjoy.”

For Tim, another highlight was seeing Norsewear’s iconic snowflake incorporated into the can design.

“It’s a winter beer, so it felt like the perfect fit. Seeing the Norsewear snowflake on the can is something I’m really proud of.”

Kirsty says blending the identities of both brands was one of the most enjoyable parts of the project.

“Including the Norsewear snowflake was really fun. It represents this wonderful mix of heritage and innovation – celebrating what’s worked for decades while continuing to create something fresh and exciting.”

The partnership isn’t entirely new. Norsewear has previously produced brewer’s socks for the Sawmill team, along with custom-made wool beer koozies. The companies even carried out informal temperature tests, discovering that Norsewear’s 100 percent traceable merino wool keeps a beer cold just as effectively as it keeps feet warm.

Beyond the novelty of a sock company releasing a craft beer, the collaboration reflects something deeper.

Both Norsewear and Sawmill operate in industries dominated by large international brands, yet both have remained committed to manufacturing and sourcing locally wherever possible. For Tim and Kirsty, working together is another way of demonstrating what can happen when Kiwi businesses support one another.

It’s a reminder that some of the best ideas are homegrown – and that this winter, the perfect combination might just be warm feet, a great beer and two New Zealand brands proudly doing things their own way.

The Sawmill Aotearoa Series #73 Norsewear NZ IPA, (6.0% ABV, 440ml can), RRP $9.95, is available now for a limited time at supermarkets, Liquorland, Super Liquor, and all good beer retailers. While stocks last.
