Simple design tips for your home office to boost your productivity

Many productivity tips revolve around what you do and how you do it but it’s important to remember, your surroundings can also affect your mood! You might avoid a lot of distractions that come with working from home – hello kids and pets! – and achieve better mental clarity by simply reorganising your workspace.

Choose colours that speak to you

It’s a fact that each colour affects our mood differently. That’s why muted greys and blues are often recommended for the bedroom, for example – they help keep you calm and relaxed. Red and yellow are believed to be energising and stimulating and are often used in modern office interiors. But designers suggest catering to your own colour preferences instead of just following the generic descriptions. If a yellow and red interior will only irritate you, there’s no way you’re going to work productively and efficiently surrounded by these colours! Opt for a palette that speaks to you personally.

Don’t be too comfortable

Having all the things you normally use during the day within reach makes sense – by keeping your laptop charger on the desk and spending less time on plugging it in, you save time for actual work, right? Wrong! Interior designers who specialise in offices and home offices agree that designing your space so that some tasks require you to get up and take a break from staring at the screen is actually a better choice. A short walk, a quick stretch of your legs and a few deep breaths while you pick up your laptop charger from a shelf in the opposite corner of your home office is sometimes all your mind needs to self-restore and conquer your to-do list with renewed enthusiasm.

Surround yourself with nature

You’ve probably heard that being surrounded by nature heals your mind and gives you an opportunity to rest and reflect. A good break, in turn, will make you more efficient and productive at work. But if you don’t have time for a quick walk outside, don’t worry! Just add a live plant to your home office or even decorate your walls with nature-inspired art or photos. Just looking at them or watering your plant will give you a short momentarily escape whenever you need it!

Choosing office furniture made from organic elements adds a touch of nature that enhances the indoor-outdoor flow, making your workspace feel more inviting. A well-crafted desk or an artful piece of décor can elevate both the aesthetics and ambiance of your office.

Breathe in

Don’t underestimate the power of smell! Did you know that choosing the right candles, diffusers and air fresheners for each space in expensive hotels is a very precise and well-paid job? Smells evoke our memories and associations and affect our mood, so a perfectly placed diffuser can change your entire experience and opinion on a particular space or an event that happened in it.

Just like colours, some aromas can calm you down and relax you when you’re stressed, others will keep you energised and motivated during the day. If there are some specific smells you associate with your honeymoon in Italy or your loud and happy Sunday family dinners, incorporate them into your home office space – good mood every day guaranteed!

Invest in your Wi-Fi

This is not a joke 🙂 Having a strong Wi-Fi connection when working from home is essential for your mental health and happiness. There’s nothing like a ruined Zoom call when your signal drops out when all you wanted to do was quickly grab a cuppa from the kitchen! And sometimes all we need to keep ticking off the boxes on our to-do list is to leave our familiar office space and retreat to a cosy couch covered with cushions and blankets that gives us a sense of security and control. You don’t want your weak Wi-Fi signal to destroy this opportunity!
