New search data from Booking.com shows a growing appetite for destinations where travellers can slow down, breathe deeply and spend time outdoors.
One place having a standout moment is Wānaka, which has jumped 29 places in the rankings of Kiwis’ preferred travel destinations. Other nature-focused favourites are also gaining momentum, including Rotorua, Taupō and Hanmer Springs – all known for their restorative landscapes and relaxed pace.
The shift reflects a broader trend toward quieter, more mindful travel. In its 2026 Travel Predictions, Booking.com identified the rise of “Hushed Hobbies” – with 34% of Kiwi travellers saying they would choose a holiday specifically to reconnect with nature. Around one in five are also embracing slower pastimes while away, from birdwatching and fishing to foraging – simple pleasures that fit perfectly with this year’s most popular Easter destinations.
