Every two weeks we share all the stuff we’ve enjoyed recently – from the latest TV shows to must-try foods and the most exciting spots to visit in New Zealand.
Hollywood (Netflix)
Ryan Murphy’s new colourful and sassy Netflix mini-series couldn’t be timed any better. It depicts real-life celebrities of the late 40’s – early 50’s who create an alternative reality where racism and homophobia are suddenly erased, giving the green light for black and Asian actresses, normally shoved into the background to play maids or caricature Asian characters, openly gay screenwriters and producers, as well as women ruling the big movie production companies with grace and compassion instead of being diminished to the traditional role of housewife.
With loads of drama, sex, wit and a vibrant retro atmosphere, this is a TV show not to be missed.
The Great (Hulu)
Created by Oscar nominee Tony McNamara and starring a handful of A-list celebs like Elle Fanning and Nicolas Hoult, this TV show depicts the ‘occasionally accurate’ life of Catherine The Great, known as one of the most powerful monarchs in the history of Europe. Just like Hollywood, The Great takes real-life people and events and places them in a slightly alternated reality.
In the first episode, we see young and well-educated Catherine arriving at the Russian court from Germany. She quickly realises that what is supposed to be the greatest country is actually nothing but a train wreck with endless drunken parties, public orgies, cruelty and zero interest in books, science or art, lead by Peter The Great’s son, also named Peter, who, in spite of being the Emperor, is actually just a big spoiled child. The rest of the show is devoted to Catherine trying to take over the throne and save Russia.
Following the footsteps of Dickinson (Apple TV+) and award-winning movie The Favourite, this TV show is full of anachronisms with explicit swearing and unbelievably robust maids being the most noticeable ones. Equal parts hilarious and shocking!
