For two nights only this Matariki, Waitomo Glowworm Caves will open after hours, giving visitors the rare opportunity to experience one of New Zealand’s most iconic natural attractions as day turns to night.
Running on Friday 10 July and Saturday 11 July, the exclusive Matariki Twilight Tour takes guests through the ancient limestone caves at dusk, offering a unique perspective of Waitomo in the stillness of the evening.
Led by local storytelling guides, visitors will discover the history and cultural significance of Waitomo while learning about Matariki, the Māori New Year, and its connection to the stars, reflection and new beginnings.
The experience culminates in the world-famous Glowworm Grotto, where guests drift silently beneath thousands of glowworms, their natural light creating one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary natural spectacles.
As the tour comes to an end, visitors emerge from beneath the earth into the crisp winter night – a fitting finale to an experience that connects the wonder of the underground with the beauty of the night sky.
