In focus: Shakira and JLo headlining Super Bowl and other events and things we loved recently

Food to enjoy, skincare to try, places to visit and things to experience – here’s a quick round-up of everything the focus team loved recently.

Shakira and JLo at Super Bowl 2020

Two music industry legends made history at the Super Bowl, becoming the first Latinas to co-headline this crazily popular event. ‘Let’s show the world what two little Latin girls can do’ wrote Jennifer Lopez on Instagram minutes before the performance. And boy, did they show us! The 1 concert was jam-packed with over 20 of their best hits, mind-blowing visual effects, hard-hitting choreography and even a dazzling pole dance performance by Lopez, who learned these skills while playing Ramona in the ultimate ‘Girl Power’ movie Hustlers. As the artists themselves pointed out, with their performance they wanted to deliver the message of ‘unity, diversity love’.

“It’s going to be a reminder of the heritage of this country, which is one of diversity and that’s what we will be celebrating.”

Shakira

None of the artists, performing at the Super Bowl, are being paid for it. The real price of the performance is an ability to deliver an important message to over 100 million people watching the Super Bowl every year (not to mention those 42 million who watched the show on YouTube in the first 24 hours).

For All Mankind (Apple TV+)

What if? This is the question we ask ourselves all the time. What if I did this or didn’t say that. Apparently, big filmmakers also have thse questions. Only on a larger scale.

What if the space race between the USSR and the USA never ended, for example? For All Mankind is a stunning 2019 show that explores the alternative history of one of the most thrilling pages of human history – the era of active space exploration. Only in this reality, the whole world freezes in front of their TVs as the Soviet astronauts land on the Moon first. The rest of the first season sees NASA and the American government scrambling to keep up.

The show is so authentic, it’s hard to believe these events weren’t happening in real life. People, who made history 50-60 years ago, whom we know really well, are carefully cast into a fiction plot. We see Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, NASA’s astronaut office chief Deke Slayton Marshall Space Flight Center director Wernher von Braun.

But what we especially loved about For All Mankind was its bold, fearless and utterly gorgeous female lead characters – Molly Cobb (character based on Jerrie Cobb, the first women pilot to successfully complete all three stages of physical and psychological evaluation that were used in choosing the first astronauts who, nevertheless, never made it to space because of, basically… being a woman), Tracy Stevens (fictional character, former pilot, wife and mum, who made it to space in spite of being ‘too beautiful to be professional’, as NASA men thought of her), Ellen Waverly (fictional character, a lesbian forced to hide her real self in order not to be fired from NASA, she also becomes the first woman to live alone on the NASA Moon station) and Danielle Poole (fictional character, the first African American astronaut and the first woman to command a US space mission).

Here are a few other incredible shows of 2019 to binge watch!
