A lot of thought goes into what is on offer at Escape. We like to please our people!
Our wonderful literary programmer Gabrielle Vincent ensures our boutique literary festival features the return of the ever popular (like the Morning Tea event and the return of Trick of the Light Theatre) and things that have been proven to be tried and true on other festival circuits (like Coffee with the Headlines). But what about something new? Gabrielle is all over that too.
This year Escape introduces Into the Night – something believed to be new to NZ’s literary festival circuit. Into the Night offers festival goers the opportunity to head out on Saturday night, 19th October, to listen to local talent presenting at a café, a bookshop and a gallery. Ticket holders get to venue hop or stay in one place – the choice is theirs.
Dame Susan – who needs no introduction in Tauranga – will speak of a life less ordinary; Julie Paama-Pengelly will focus on the powerful resurgence of moko; and multi-award-winning writer Lee Murray will enlighten with her address on speculative fiction. Anne Tiernan (born in Zambia, grown in Ireland and now settled in Tauranga Moana), will share how where she has lived shapes her writing.
Also presenting at Into the Night will be local author Carol Garden who will curate an event called Finding Your Way Home, whereby authors Donna Goodacre and Charlotte Lobb will look at how home is much more than a physical space. The literary loop includes artistic venue Kūwao, where an Into the Night presentation will focus on unpacking and explaining what the term Landback actually means.
All that, and that’s just Saturday night!
