Whether you’ve recently returned from an overseas trip or just prefer to wait out the storm inside, self-isolating from coronavirus for weeks might become really lonely and boring. Especially now, when there are are no new movies and barely any new TV shows coming out! Here are some interesting and fun things you can do while staying at home.
Read books. Honestly, when else will you have THAT MUCH free time? Time to re-read all-time favs and discover some new amazing authors. Hop on Amazon or Apple Book Store for an epic variety of dirt-cheap digital bestsellers. Here are, for example, great fresh books by New Zealand authors and here are some of our editor’s favourites.
Listen to podcasts. Not much of a reader? How about listening to some world-famous podcasts? The Apple Podcast app still has a great list of podcasts for women that they created to celebrate International Women’s Day and here are three podcasts we absolutely adore.
Visit a museum. Wait, what? Doesn’t self-isolation mean we have to stay home? Exactly so! But to visit some of the best museums in the world you no longer have to travel as they offer online virtual tours! British Museum in London, Guggenheim Museum in New York, Musée d’Orsay in Paris, Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and many more are now accessible online, thanks to Google Street View service.
Visit Metropolitan Opera. Ok-ok, you already know it must be an online show 🙂 And it really is! New York’s Metropolitan Opera is offering free daily digital shows from March, 16th to March, 22nd. Go to their website and watch them live or at any convenient time in the next 20 hours after the digital premiere.
Apply a face mask. You now have more time for self-care routine, so time to get your skincare rituals back on track. Here are the best products for glowing skin (shopping them online is also quite a fun activity, isn’t it!)
Have a picnic. After all, your backyard is technically also part of your home, right? Don’t stay inside, have a BBQ and outdoor lunch with your family (if they’re self-isolating as well) while the weather still allows that.
Call your nan. Or sibling. Or school friend. Chances are, there are quite a few important people in your life you never have enough time for. Why not catch up on their life now?
Learn something new. There are so many online courses these days, you can basically become an expert in anything while sitting home. Nice bonus – many of them are free! Like Alison.com, for example – from photography to cooking to marketing to leadership skills, they have everything here!
Experiment in the kitchen. We never have time for that! But if you’re stuck at home, you might as well eat well. Now you have the perfect opportunity to cook or bake something special. Start with healthy recipes to support your immune system and ensure you’re getting enough nutrients and vitamins.

Go live. Can’t get outside? Go live on Instagram or Facebook and update your friends on how your self-isolation is going in video format.
Exercise. We mean this energy you’re not wasting on traffic and other daily things should go somewhere, right! Do an energising stretch in the morning and work on building your muscles in the afternoon. You’ll be grateful to yourself after your self-isolation is over.
Scroll through Instagram. You would’ve done that anyway, we just had to say it out loud! Don’t forget to subscribe to @focusmagazinenz if you haven’t already.
Do your nails. Self-love time, remember? And what’s nicer than a fresh manicure? We bet it’s been a while since you’ve done it yourself, so it’s time to recover your old skills!
Start journaling. Despite it being a weird and uncertain time, there is still so much we can be grateful for. Write all the positive moments of your life into your journal and spend your self-isolation reflecting on your past and planning your future. Here is our favourite journal by a local talent, by the way.
Do a puzzle. Because, why not?
Create something. Be it a scrapbook, a hand-made candle or a new shelf – creating something with your own hands is a deeply satisfying, positive process.

Re-arrange the furniture. Home interior looking a bit outdated? Here are seven easy tweaks to make to refresh the general look of your house.
And clean the house. Be it coronavirus protection kind of cleaning or just general cleaning, there is always something to do around the house.
Back up your phone pictures. Honestly, this is the one thing NO ONE ever does in time! So, when our phones run out of memory, we’re forced to delete precious photos to take new ones. Upload all your photos to your computer, sort them out and erase them from your phone. You’ll then be ready to create new memories once your coronavirus self-isolation is over!
Watch our YouTube. We have some inspiring and educational interviews there, as well as behind the scenes of our cover photoshoots. Exciting!
