As I navigate the twists and turns of motherhood over 40 with a tiny human who’s teaching me to slow down and appreciate the little things, I’m constantly reminded of the importance of self-care and self-leadership. It’s easy to get lost in the demands of caring for a toddler, building a business, and managing a household – but what about caring for myself?
As a psychologist, I know that self-leadership isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. It’s about tuning into my own needs, values, and desires, and making intentional choices that nourish my mind, body, and soul. When I’m feeling grounded and centred, I’m a better mum, partner, and entrepreneur.
From tiny humans to big goals, it’s a wild ride. But I’ve found that with the right strategies, I can show up more fully for my child and my business. Here are a few self-leadership strategies that are helping me stay on track:
1. Prioritising self-care rituals that feel authentic and nourishing
For me, this means starting the day slowly with a gentle yoga routine. It’s not about fitting into someone else’s idea of self-care, but about listening to what my body and mind need.
2. Setting boundaries that protect my energy and time
As a business owner and mum, it’s easy to get pulled in a million different directions. But I’ve learned that saying “no” to things that don’t align with my values or priorities is actually a form of self-care.
3. Practising self-compassion when I inevitably make mistakes or things don’t go as planned
Let’s be real, mum-guilt is a thing! But I’ve learned to treat myself with kindness and understanding, just as I would a close friend. It’s okay to make mistakes and it’s okay to ask for help.
4. Staying connected to my values and passions, and making sure they’re reflected in my daily choices
For me, this means making time for stillness, and connecting with other women who inspire me.
It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. When I’m feeling grounded and centred, I’m more resilient, more patient, and more present in my relationships – with my child, my business, and myself.
I’d love to hear from you – what’s helping you navigate the challenges of motherhood and ambition over 40? What self-leadership strategies are you using to stay grounded and focused?
