It happens to everyone: one moment you’re your casual positive self, then something changes and suddenly you’re the Queen of Darkness, throwing killer glances with a flash of an eye. Giving in to all those negative thoughts and letting off steam can be so tempting. But let’s face it, no one is going to give you this ruined day back. So how do you turn around a bad day and make it a little better instead?
Step 1: Admit that it truly is a bad day
As obvious as it seems, recognising you’re not really having the time of your life today might be one of the greatest challenges. Pay attention to the early warning signs – are you having angry thoughts? Lacking self-confidence and self-belief? Getting snappy with people around you? Over-indulging into easy happiness-boosters like chocolate or shopping? Well, girl, you ARE having a bad day! And it’s time to admit it and take charge before it gets too late.
Step 2: Slow down
Now that you know what’s going on, put whatever you’ve been doing on pause and get out of your current environment and, more importantly, out of your own head. Go for a walk, make yourself a giant mug of coffee or at least close your eyes for a few seconds. Breathe slowly and deeply and try to focus on the here and now, not on what’s been driving you mad. Just breathe and try to calm your mind down.
Step 3: Change your attitude
Honestly, we will be the first ones to give you a standing ovation if you master this step. Letting go of your anger, disappointment or whatever triggered your bad mood today is hard. But it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. And if you truly and honestly want this day to become a better one, this is your only way – make the choice to be happier! Convince yourself you can and will be positive. Accept that whatever made you feel miserable is now in the past and won’t affect your mood and decisions, draw the line, and get ready for a fresh start.
Step 4: Reset
Ok, you’re ready for a fresh start. But how can one really start over? We suggest a quick ‘reset ritual’ – a physical action that will signal your mind and body that this was the finish line for today’s bad mood and that it’s now time to behave more positively. Taking a shower is our favourite ‘ritual’ – nothing says ‘It’s time to wake up and be a nice person’ more than a good ol’ hot shower. But if it’s not an option, even something small, like applying your favourite lipstick and smiling at your reflection in the mirror helps. Make this little ‘rescue action’ your habit and next time you repeat it, your mind will already know it’s time to switch on that secret ‘happy me’ button.
Step 5: Do something nice
Now that you’ve proven you’re stronger and smarter than your hormones, it’s time to do something really kind and selfish – just to, you know, make sure all those herculean efforts to reset the mood were really worth it. Invent a new funny game for your little munchkins, finally declutter your wardrobe or call a friend you haven’t seen for a while. See, you’re amazing! Go on, be that awesome ray of sunshine!
