Over the years we have all developed our own makeup routines that suit our needs, time and skills. But what if instead of masking tiny imperfections we’re actually only making things worse? Don’t worry, we’ve collected some of the most common makeup mistakes in one article and are about to explain how to avoid them.
Not taking care of your skin tone. Something we see gorgeous women doing waaaay too often. We get it, perfectly blending your foundation, concealer and powder in the morning is the last thing you want to spend time on, but it’s actually the most important part of your makeup regime. The perfect lipstick colour or your outstanding eye makeup skills will never be appreciated if you don’t apply them to an even skin tone. Every makeup artist will agree that once you’ve created a flawless skin coverage you’re more than welcome to leave home without any mascara or lipstick at all, but never the other way around.

Not setting your makeup. Makeup looks wonderful when you apply it but becomes flaky and shiny (in a bad way) in a few hours? Well, that’s because you’ve neglected to add primer and setting spray! Primer is the first thing you apply to your face when doing your makeup. It’s a transparent cream that keeps beauty products where they belong throughout the day. Cool primers like vegan and cruelty-free INIKA can also replace your moisturiser. Setting spray is also a very useful tool but we must admit, while it’s a must-have for a more colourful and layered evening makeup, leaving it out in the morning isn’t a huge makeup mistake. With a proper primer you’ll be fine til’ the evening!
Not filling in the brows. Brows are ‘the frame’ of your face. And you want this frame to look perfect! While it’s so easy and quick to apply a brow mascara or gel, it certainly isn’t enough. These products only emphasise the colour of the brow hair but they do nothing to improve the shape. Sadly, way too few people were born with perfectly shaped brows. To create the perfect arch, use a brow pencil or pomade first. Fill in the brows with tiny feathery upward strokes to make them look wider and longer and finish off with your fav brow mascara for a more natural result. We love everything brow-related from Designer Brands.
Matching eyeshadow colour with your clothes. We have no idea where this one comes from but, trust us, it’s a no-no (unless you’re getting ready for a 60s-style party)! A good solution is to go for neutral warm colours, regardless of what you’re wearing (check out ‘Keep It Neutral’ palette, for example) or to pick eyeshadows a few tones brighter than the main colour in your clothes. Feeling a bit creative? Opt for the colours sitting on the opposite side of a colour wheel from your clothes’ colours.
Applying blush to the apples of your cheeks. It seems so obvious that blush belongs on your cheeks. Well, it was OK when we were 21 as the shape of a young face is incredibly forgiving. But as we mature, such a small thing as blush can make you look 10 years younger or 10 years older. For a better outcome, apply it further up, towards your temples and add a tiny little bit to the upper cheekbones, not too close to the nose area, to visually lift cheeks up.
