Last month, I explored the concept of unconscious patterns and how they can hold us back in our lives. Today, I’m going to dive deeper into three common patterns that can be particularly challenging: people-pleasing, self-sabotage, and fear of intimacy.
People-Pleasing: The Need to Please
Have you ever found yourself going out of your way to please others, even if it means sacrificing your own needs and desires? This can be a sign of people-pleasing, a pattern that can lead to burnout, resentment, and even depression. When we people-please, we often prioritise others’ needs over our own, which can lead to feelings of frustration and anger.
To break free from people-pleasing, it’s essential to recognise the underlying reasons for this behaviour. Are you seeking validation and love from others? Are you afraid of rejection or conflict? Once you understand the root cause, you can start to develop healthier boundaries and learn to prioritise your own needs.
Self-Sabotage: The Power of Self-Doubt
Self-sabotage is another common pattern that can hold us back from achieving our goals and living our best lives. When we self-sabotage, we often engage in behaviours that undermine our own success, such as procrastination, self-criticism, or substance abuse. This can be due to a deep-seated fear of failure or success, or a lack of self-confidence.
To overcome self-sabotage, it’s crucial to recognise the patterns and behaviours that are holding you back. Take a step back and assess your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Are there any negative self-talk or self-limiting beliefs that are holding you back? By becoming more aware of these patterns, you can start to challenge and change them.
Fear of Intimacy: The Fear of Closeness
Fear of intimacy is a pattern that can make it challenging to form deep, meaningful connections with others. When we fear intimacy, we may push people away or struggle to open up and be vulnerable. This can be due to past traumas, fear of rejection, or a lack of trust.
To overcome fear of intimacy, it’s essential to build trust and develop healthy communication skills. Start by taking small steps towards intimacy, such as sharing your thoughts and feelings with a trusted friend or partner. Practise active listening and empathy, and work on building a sense of safety and trust in your relationships.
Breaking Free from Unconscious Patterns
Breaking free from unconscious patterns takes time, effort, and self-awareness. By becoming more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, you can start recognising the patterns that are holding you back. Take small steps towards change, and be patient with yourself as you work through the process.
Reflection Questions
Take some time to reflect on your unconscious patterns. Ask yourself:
– What patterns am I noticing in my life?
– What are the root causes of these patterns?
– How can I challenge my assumptions and break free from these patterns?
– What support systems can I put in place to help me stay accountable and motivated?
