Theme for this year is Learn from Yesterday – Live for Today – Hope for Tomorrow and Robyn’s story resonates with it:

At the age of 8, Robyn Paterson and her then best friend Mercy Sibanda waited excitedly to greet a man hailed as a hero, the saviour of a nation. They were paraded through the streets as a symbol of the New Zimbabwe under Comrade Robert Mugabe thus becoming the poster children of the new regime. When the country descended into turmoil with whole villages being killed under Mugabe the Paterson family were forced to flee to New Zealand.

A generation later Robyn returned to her homeland and undertook a high risk undercover search to find the fate of her childhood friend. Robyn’s feature documentary, Finding Mercy – tells the story of Robyn’s search to find her childhood friend and won Robyn the Best Emerging Director Award at the DocEdge Festival in 2013.

Robyn has a decade of experience in the film and television industry. Most recently she has been directing popular architectural series Grand Designs – New Zealand, Rachel Hunters Tour of Beauty and House Hunt as well as episodes of the long running health and disability series Attitude. She has produced various documentaries for television and as an independent film maker and is the author of Tips from Your Nana and Tips from Your Grandad.
